AUA WINERY
Back to 50’s, the historical vineyards of CAMBAS (pioneer of Greek viticulture), were granted to the Agricultural University of Athens, in order to continue the tradition of cultivating the vines. More than 24 Ha of vines are planted with Asyrtiko, Athiri, Malagouzia and of course Savatiano and Roditis. Adequate climate conditions and soil characteristics give the necessaries to produce good quality grapes. But, it is also the scientific approach based on the guidance of the corresponding university laboratories and the high-end scientists who dedicate their efforts to that target. Besides, undergraduate and graduate students specialised on viticulture or enology undertake the tasks from pruning to bottling. The aim is to produce high quality wines where the grapes express their characteristics.
The brand of the wines produced is GNOSI meaning KNOWLEDGE, reflecting the philosophy of these PGI wines. Three different wines are produced, firstly Asyrtiko which is a wine characterised by the apple/pear aroma of young asyrtiko’s with a crispy feeling when tasting, secondly Malagouzia, a high intensity aromatic wine, with fully varietal character and last, but not least a Savatiano wine with intense banana/pear aromas and a medium body mouthfeel, ideal to accompany Greek dishes.
Researches are on the way for the adaptation in Attica of other varieties, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Enology and Alcoholic Drinks of the University
